Pennoyer Families,
Wow...this was definitely a mini Polar Vortex week for everyone. Our students and staff hung in there though and made the best of many indoor recess days and arrival times. The good news is, it's looking like warmer weather all next week. After this week, it's gonna feel like Florida around here!
I wanted to share a fun moment of Pennoyer pride with all of you. It certainly made me smile. On Thursday this week, our PE team helped to coordinate the American Heart Association coming in for assemblies for our K-5 students and then for our 6-8 students. They did a wonderful job showcasing the importance of physical health, eating right, and making the right choices with what you put into your system. Our younger kids dressed up, celebrated, and danced, while our older students watched a presentation and some poignant videos about the realities of health conditions in our country and how to set themselves up on a path for success. Our students were engaged and thoughtful listeners throughout the assemblies.
Remember...to support our school and every single student here, Pennoyer families and friends can join the private Facebook group “Pennoyer Moms and Dads” if they wish. Families can also check out PennoyerYes.com to sign up for updates, be a volunteer, and seek out ways you can get involved.
Finally, we'll be have a very important meeting at Pennoyer on February 15th at 6pm for parents/guardians, students, and staff. This will be a great opportunity to come together and give parents even more information of the realities that are at stake for our school and continue to have thoughtful conversations surrounding everything. HERE is an informational flyer and here is the PARENT RSVP LINK We hope everyone can join us!
School Information and Reminders:
ESL Volunteer Instructor Program at The Salvation Army - If you're interested, see the message below and contact Pamela Church-Pryor at the Salvation Army. Her number is 708-456-6220 and her email is Pryor@usc.salvationarmy.org
Here at The Salvation Army, we are looking ahead to ways we can better serve our community in the new year and we feel ESL classes would be beneficial, considering how many immigrants and refugees have come to live among us. We’d prefer to provide classes during the school hours, so parents would not have to worry about child care, but we may also consider evening classes.
Ukrainian Translator Opportunity with the Norridge Police Department - Wayne Schober, the Deputy Chief of Police from the Norridge Police Department, reached out asking if we could help find any staff or community members to support when translators are needed at the police department.
We Celebrate at Pennoyer!
I’m so proud to share our celebration this week and honor some very special students. The VFW sponsors a youth essay competition each year to give students in grades 6th - 8th an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on an annual patriotic theme. This year's theme was “My Pledge to Our Veterans". With the leadership of our very own Ms. Julia Peters, we had Pennoyer students enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen contest and the following students all placed as Post champions! Congratulations to 8th graders Bartosz Dabkowski, Maya Gibes, and Lauren Whitlock. Congratulations also goes out to 7th graders Nathan Flores and Julia Hnativ. A very special honor needs to be highlighted for Lauren Whitlock, whose essay advanced to District 3 VFW and AUX earning her an amazing 2nd Place award!!! We couldn’t be more proud of this group of middle schoolers using their voices and literacy skills at the highest level.
