Pennoyer Family Newsletter - 4/28/23

Pennoyer Families,

Ok...when you have a group of students and families that are so incredibly thoughtful on your birthday, you know you're in a special place.  Last Friday, the middle school students in our Principal's Crew brought me a gift bag that was so unnecessary but so incredibly appreciated.

There has definitely been a lot to celebrate these last couple of weeks at Pennoyer beyond my birthday though.   Last Thursday, Mrs. Tronco, Mrs. Kula, and so many of our staff members stepped up and created such a special event for our students at Literacy Night.  The carnival theme was a huge hit, and everyone had so much fun!  Then it was time for Earth Day celebrations last Friday to help promote conserving our planet and understanding how our environment works.  Thanks to Mrs. Michaels and Ms. Torossi for taking out our 2nd graders to clean up in the back of the school to take care of the precious space around us.  In 3rd grade, Mrs. Loring and Mrs. Adkins had a special visitor.  Mrs. Adkin's sister Emily is a nature conservationist who currently works for the Environmental Defense Fund, and she has also worked for The Nature Conservancy. She visited the 3rd graders and gave a great presentation and shared stories that truly amazed our students!  Finally, Mrs. Mardula took her students outside to understand how photosynthesis really works in the natural world with some hands on demonstrations.

This week, we can't forget to mention how amazing our 8th graders were when we brought them to Maine South to see the musical production of The Addams Family.  They were really impressed with how good the show was, and they represented our school proudly!  Thanks for the support from Ms. Bowden, Mrs. Brunell, and Dr. Kopta.

I couldn't end this week's newsletter without giving a shout out to my Chicago Bears and the 2023 NFL Draft from last night.  They traded down a pick and ended up with outside tackle Darnell Wright from Tennessee.  I'm excited about this level of protection for Justin Fields, but I'm sure like a lot of us that were following along, I was disappointed that they didn't take the hometown standout guard from Maine South and Northwestern, Peter Skoronski.  It would have been cool to see him as a Chicago Bear!

Don't forget about Community Kindness Day at Pennoyer tomorrow from 10:00am-12:00pm.  We have so many fun activities planned rain or shine!  Also, don't forget about the Mother Son Bowling Event tomorrow at 3:30pm!

School Information and Reminders:

*Parents/Guardians - Please remember that there are no students or other children aloud on the playgrounds in the back of Pennoyer on our blacktop after school hours.  We know this is tempting as the weather gets nicer, but we lock the gates shortly after dismissal time and ask that all families help support this when school is let out each day.

**Registration for the '23-24 school year will begin on Friday, May 5th in Skyward and stay open until Friday, June 2nd.  There will be a $25 late fee after June 2.

Fees will not increase for next school year; $200 Registration Fee per student, $35 Graduation Fee for 8th Grade Only, and the Technology Lease is $75 per student.

We Celebrate at Pennoyer!

Recently, our 7th and 8th grade students participated in an essay contest sponsored by the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a human rights organization that teaches about the Holocaust and confronts hate, bigotry, and terrorism. Students wrote essays about how technology combined with hatred can hurt mankind. Two 8th grade students, Isabella Behnke and Natalia Piwowarczyk, have advanced to the final round! They are submitting video presentations of their essays and these videos will be viewed on Sunday, May 7th by a panel of judges. Winners could receive a laptop computer, an iPad, or a $250 gift card. We look forward to the next round of results! Thanks to Mrs. Brunell and Ms. Bowden who helped to support their students through in ELA with this opportunity.
