Pennoyer Family Newsletter - 4/17/23

Pennoyer Families,

What a beautiful week of weather we had!  It definitely felt like summer around Pennoyer, but as we all know, colder weather is always on it's way in April when you live around Chicago.  Hoping the worst is behind us though.  It's been a productive week at school with students in 3rd-8th grade finishing up their IAR testing, PE classes finally getting to be outside on the field a little bit, and students and staff continuing to ride a positive wave with so much pride and hope after the election on April 4th.  Baseball season is starting up in Chicago too, and I'm not very excited about the Cubs or the White Sox this year to tell you the truth.  I always lean towards the White Sox though, being that my dad and my grandparents grew up on the South Side of Chicago.  I'm not holding my breath, but I'm confident the Sox can pull off a better season than last year.  To me, Chicago baseball is just something we have to get through to enjoy the fall and the Chicago Bears around here.  Just my opinion though.

Enjoy the upcoming weekend and bundle up again for more normal temperatures around here next week.

School Information and Reminders:

*Parents/Guardians - Please remember that there are no students or other children aloud on the playgrounds in the back of Pennoyer on our blacktop after school hours.  We know this is tempting as the weather gets nicer, but we lock the gates shortly after dismissal time and ask that all families help support this when school is let out each day.

**Registration for the '23-24 school year will begin on Friday, May 5th in Skyward and stay open until Friday, June 2nd.  There will be a $25 late fee after June 2.

Fees will not increase for next school year; $200 Registration Fee per student, $35 Graduation Fee for 8th Grade Only, and the Technology Lease is $75 per student.

We Celebrate at Pennoyer!

Our celebration this week focuses on our 7th graders and Mrs. Garcia and Miss Hauer.  As middle school math teachers, they collaborated and came up with a creative leadership opportunity for our 7th graders paying it forward with academic support for our younger grades.  In the end, they decided to try something to make SEL time for 7th graders a growing opportunity and put their social and mentoring skills to the test. This year they created a system where they asked teachers if they would be willing to have 7th grade students in their classes once a week on Thursdays during 7th grade SEL time.  From that, they created a weekly rotation where they send three students to Mrs. Dylag to work with Kindergartners, three students to Mrs. Adkins, and three students to Mrs. Loring to work with 3rd graders.   7th graders have done an amazing job stepping up and working with the students in small groups in the Kindergarten and 3rd grade classes to support their learning and growth this year!
