Pennoyer Family Newsletter - 5/26/23

Pennoyer Families,

We had another fun and productive week at Pennoyer!  Our K-2nd graders had an amazing field trip to Brookfield Zoo early in the week.  They saw all kinds of animals, learned about their habitats, and made connections to lessons they've learned in school this year.  I poked around a little bit, and it seemed like a lot of our students liked the monkeys the best!

I also wanted to let all K-8th grade families know that MAP testing Student Growth Reports have been sent home with the students today.  Please make sure to get these from your child, and look things over.  These are just a few data points we use for Math and Literacy to help support our students, our staff, and our curriculum.  Feel free to reach out to teachers with any specific questions or concerns.

I wish all our families a Happy Memorial Day and enjoy the 3 day weekend and beautiful weather!

School Information and Reminders:

*Families, as the weather gets nicer each day, and we're headed towards the end of the school year, we're seeing more students at many of our grade levels pushing the boundaries of our school dress code at Pennoyer. We're addressing this as a staff and administrative team, but I'm also asking for your help, support, and collaboration with this. Please be mindful of the school dress code and have open conversations with your children about wearing appropriate clothing to school each day. Thanks so much. Here is information from our Student/Parent handbook to guide you...

  • Clothing must be appropriate for school and the weather.

  • Clothing that shows inappropriate or offensive symbols, signs, and language  will be provided with alternative clothing to wear for the day.

  • When wearing shorts, they should be long enough to ensure that the student is appropriately covered..

  • Undergarments must not be visible.

  • Appropriateness of clothing will be determined in alignment to Board of Education Policy 7:160 Student Appearance

**Please continue to do everything you can to get your student(s) to school on time each and every day. We're seeing more and more tardies as the school year rolls on. School starts promptly at 8:10am and by 8:15am, students are officially marked tardy. In addition, their often missing out on important information in their homeroom and 1st period classes. Thanks for your help and support with this!

We Celebrate at Pennoyer!

This week I had to celebrate the incredible Art Showcase/Talent Show we had at Pennoyer this past Wednesday night.  What an amazing display of creativity, passion, and talent from our students!  I can't thank Ms. Meyer, Ms. Payne, Ms. Kopolous, and Ms. Strecker enough for being incredible directors and putting this whole event together.  So many of our staff members came out to help and support this night as well.  As most everyone knows, being on stage, playing music, and performing, have always been a huge part of my life, and I know how difficult it can be to put yourself out there.  With that said, our students were so brave and proud as they showcased their many talents, and I know the audience loved and appreciated every minute of it.  The Arts are such an important aspect of life to explore during childhood, and I'm so proud of Pennoyer for doing everything we can as a community to promote these interests with opportunities like our 2023 Art Showcase/Talent Show.  I know our students were grateful for the opportunity to shine this past week, and we couldn't be more proud of every single one of them!

What’s Around the Corner?

    • The Chicago Public Library's 2023 Summer Learning Challenge will feature in-person registration and book reporting. This means that we they need Junior Volunteers to help with the Summer Learning Challenge. This is for students 12-17 years old. Volunteering at the library is an exciting and air-conditioned way to acquire job experience and service hours during the summertime. Thank you for helping the Oriole Park branch of the Chicago Public Library connect interested students with this opportunity to volunteer.
