Pennoyer Family Newsletter - 6/2/23

Pennoyer Families,

I can't believe we only have two weeks of school left!  There have been so many exciting things going on at Pennoyer and the energy is flowing.  It was amazing to see our 5th graders graduate from the D.A.R.E. program this week.  They have been working hard over the last 10 weeks, and this is truly a special program they get to be a part of as they move into the middle school grades.  They can surely take these lessons and all they've learned to support themselves and their decision making for many years to come.  Thanks to Mrs. Shearer, Mr. Widd, and Officer Deutscher from the Norridge Police Department for all of their hard work and dedication they put into making this opportunity possible for our 5th graders.

Our Norridge Police Department certainly showed up this week at Pennoyer, as they have all year for us in so many ways.  We were fortunate to have Officer Zage and Officer Pina back at our school again to talk to some of our youngest students this time around about online safety and being responsible when using technology and the internet.  This past Tuesday, they visited the K-2nd grade classrooms and gave presentations that really spoke to this age group.  Our students were so thoughtful and asked some great questions along the way.  We hope to continue this level of collaboration and education with our Norridge Police Department next year when it comes to online safety education for all of our students and families.  HERE is a copy of the presentation if you're interested in checking it out!

School Information and Reminders:

*Families, as the weather gets nicer each day, and we're headed towards the end of the school year, we're seeing more students at many of our grade levels pushing the boundaries of our school dress code at Pennoyer. We've been addressing this as a staff and administrative team, but I'm also asking for your help, support, and collaboration with this. Please be mindful of the school dress code and have open conversations with your children about wearing appropriate clothing to school each day. Thanks so much. Here is information from our Student/Parent handbook to guide you...

  • Clothing must be appropriate for school and the weather.

  • Clothing that shows inappropriate or offensive symbols, signs, and language  will be provided with alternative clothing to wear for the day.

  • When wearing shorts, they should be long enough to ensure that the student is appropriately covered..

  • Undergarments must not be visible.

  • Appropriateness of clothing will be determined in alignment to Board of Education Policy 7:160 Student Appearance

**Please continue to do everything you can to get your student(s) to school on time each and every day. We're seeing more and more tardies as the school year rolls on. School starts promptly at 8:10am and by 8:15am, students are officially marked tardy. In addition, their often missing out on important information in their homeroom and 1st period classes. Thanks for your help and support with this!

We Celebrate at Pennoyer!

Over the last couple of weeks, our K-8th grade students participated in the Pennoyer Math Bee to have some fun and show off their skills with math facts.  Our students were competitive and brought their A game every step of the way!  Thanks to Ms. Strecker and Mrs. Loring for helping put this all together again this year and to all of our staff that took time out of their days to help support the Math Bee with their classes.  The results are in, so here we go...Round 1 winners last week include: Kindergarten - Warchol, 1st Grade - Barzano, 2nd Grade - Torossi, 3rd Grade - Adkins, 4th Grade - Kopoulos, 5th Grade - Widd, 6th Grade - Peters, 7th Grade - Garcia, and 8th Grade - DeVivo.  For our Final Round this past week and overall grade band winners, it was Ms. Torossi's 2nd grade class that took home the trophy for our Primary grades, Mr. Widd's 5th grade class that took home the trophy for our Intermediate grades, and Mr. DeVivo's 8th grade class that won overall for the Middle School grades.  Way to go!  We're so proud of everyone who participated in the Math Bee this year.
